Got questions? Here are some answers.
Below are the most common questions people tend to have about one on one coaching.
The Coaching Process
-
Therapy focuses on treating mental health concerns with a licensed professional, while coaching is for people who are generally doing well but want focused support to grow, gain clarity, and make changes in specific areas of life.
If therapy is about healing, coaching is about flourishing. 🌿
-
It depends on what feels right for you. Some clients meet weekly, others once or twice a month. In the beginning, more frequent sessions can help build momentum and support the nervous system work we’re doing together. Over time, we may space things out as you feel more grounded and confident.
What matters most is consistency—meeting at least once a month helps keep your growth moving forward. We’ll decide together on a rhythm that honors both your goals and your wellbeing.
-
Every journey looks a little different. If we’re focused on one specific topic, you may notice meaningful shifts in just a few sessions. More often, though, coaching around religious harm and personal growth unfolds over time, since one goal often reveals others layered underneath.
What matters most is that you feel supported and see progress toward what matters to you. Some clients work with me for a season, others for longer stretches. You’re always free to pause or stop at any time—it’s your process, and your choice. And throughout, you can trust that I’ll be right there with you, supporting the freedom you’re working toward.
-
My coaching style is relational and collaborative—I believe real change happens when you feel safe, seen, and in charge of your own process. I draw from somatic practices, parts work (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment tools, and a trauma-informed understanding of the nervous system.
Depending on your unique needs, I may integrate approaches like:
Somatic awareness and gentle nervous system regulation
Parts work (IFS) for understanding and compassion toward inner dynamics
Cognitive processing and practical tools for clarity and direction
Attachment-informed support to strengthen relationships with yourself and others
Together, we’ll work at your pace, building awareness, choice, and connection in ways that feel embodied, respectful, and empowering.
-
Sessions are either 75 minutes or 45 minutes.
I provide 75 minute sessions for clients seeking focused, nervous system recovery work because this time frame allows us to really go deep, during each session, something that is essential when working to address trauma at a nervous system level.
45-minute sessions work well when you want focused support to explore your experiences more cognitively—whether that’s unpacking beliefs from high-control religion, noticing thought patterns, or processing relational dynamics.
Usually I start off each session by asking how your day has been. Next, I’ll check in about how you were after our last session. And then I’ll help set the agenda for the current session by asking if there’s anything that’s “top of mind” you would like to process.
If nothing feels especially pressing, I can guide us through topics related to your previously identified goals.
-
Your healing journey is its own kind of epic—every hero has a different path, and yours will be uniquely yours. In our first session, we’ll talk about what freedom and flourishing mean to you, and that vision will guide us as we move forward.
For many clients, results include things like:
Feeling more grounded and at ease in their own body
Gaining clarity and confidence in decision-making
Untangling beliefs from high-control religion and reconnecting with their own values
Building healthier relationships with themselves and others
Along the way, I’ll check in with you to make sure our work feels aligned and on track with what matters most to you. While I can’t promise a specific outcome, I can promise to bring my full presence, skill, and care to support the freedom you’re working toward.
-
Absolutely. Therapy and coaching can work beautifully alongside each other. If you’re already taking care of your mental health with a therapist, you’re setting a strong foundation for the work we’ll do together. Coaching often feels even more valuable when it builds on the insights and healing you’ve already started in therapy.
If you’re currently in therapy, I’ll ask a few questions about what you’ve been working on, so we can make sure our coaching supports—not duplicates—your process. My focus is on helping you explore your relationship with religious trauma, spiritual recovery, and the freedom you’re moving toward. 🌿
And if you’re not in therapy right now, that’s okay too. Coaching can stand on its own as a powerful space for growth, and we’ll shape our work around where you are today. If we ever notice that clinical mental health support would serve you best, I’m confident we can get you connected to a therapist for that additional care.
-
Yes—you’re welcome to email me between sessions. While I don’t provide individualized coaching support over email, it can be really helpful to share quick updates, reflections, or questions that come up. That way, when we meet, we can use our time together more deeply and intentionally.
You’re also welcome to “bookmark” topics in an email, so we don’t lose track of what feels important to you for our next session.
Finances
-
Because our work together is coaching—not psychotherapy—it isn’t covered by insurance. Coaching also doesn’t qualify for out-of-network benefits, since those claims require a mental health diagnosis and a psychotherapy billing code.
That said, many clients find the investment in coaching worthwhile because it gives them focused support, flexibility, and freedom outside of the limitations of insurance requirements.

I do not offer sliding scale rates for coaching. While sliding scales are often used in therapy to increase access to care, I’ve chosen to support accessibility in a different way.
Each week, I invest time and energy into creating resources for the Flourishing Exvangelical Substack—a space where you’ll find tools, meditations, reflections, and prompts at an affordable monthly price. This allows me to offer support to a wider community, including those who may not be ready or able to invest in one-on-one coaching.
-
Payments are handled securely through Stripe. When we begin working together, you’ll place a card on file, and it will be automatically charged after each session.
I’m always working to keep my systems efficient and client-friendly. If you ever have questions about billing—or need receipts or invoices—just let me know, and I’ll make sure you have what you need.
Technical Details
-
I use doxy.me, a secure and easy-to-use video platform. You’ll use the same link for every session, and there’s a virtual waiting room if you’d like to connect early and settle in before we begin.
If you ever have trouble connecting, I’ll make sure we get it sorted quickly so you can focus on the session itself.
-
Yes—as long as you’re in a private space where you can focus without major distractions. Creating that sense of privacy helps us both be fully present and makes the session more effective.
I can’t meet with you if you’re driving or in a setting with significant background noise, but beyond that, you have the freedom to choose a location that feels safe and comfortable for you. Many clients like to keep water nearby, a journal for notes or reflections, or even a favorite blanket—small things that can make the space feel grounding and supportive. You’ll find me ready with a warm drink and full attention on creating a container for wherever you find yourself that day.
Most sessions are held by video on a secure platform, since this allows us to track both words and nervous system cues. For clients booking a 45-minute session—where the work is more cognitive in focus—phone sessions can be arranged if that feels like a better fit.
-
Yes—I work with clients both inside and outside of the U.S. The only real challenge is making time zones work (I promise I’ll never ask you to meet me at 3 a.m. my time).
One of the things I value most about coaching is the opportunity to connect with people in diverse contexts. Your experiences are shaped not only by personal history but also by culture and environment. My heart is to bring expertise in how high-control systems impact our humanity, and to support you in applying that understanding within your own unique context—wherever you live in the world. 🌍
-
While no online system can guarantee 100% privacy (since email, paperwork, and payment platforms are hosted by third parties), I take every step possible to protect your information. I use secure platforms for sessions and payments, and I handle anything in my control with the same level of care and integrity I bring to my work as a therapist. (Think: confidentiality guarded with the kind of diligence I was once told would secure me a spot in heaven.)
Confidentiality also works best when we hold it together. Choosing a private space for sessions and using personal (rather than shared) devices can help protect your privacy on your end, too.
My commitment is to handle your information with thoughtfulness and discretion, and to be mindful of the trust you place in me. What that means in practice: I won’t share your information without your permission, and I’ll always be mindful of the trust you place in me.
-
I see clients on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons (EST). Think of it as your midweek space to pause, reset, and focus on yourself—before the weekend rush takes over.
These hours reflect my ideal schedule, but I do my best to stay flexible and adapt when I can, especially for clients in different time zones. You’ll be able to see my availability directly when booking, so scheduling is simple and clear.
General Questions
-
Although my religious harm recovery work is offered as coaching, I also continue to practice as a licensed psychotherapist in Virginia, where I specialize in treating religious trauma and related mental health concerns. That training has given me more than 14 years of experience working with complex trauma and a deep understanding of how high-control systems impact the whole of a person’s psychological wellbeing.
In coaching, I don’t treat mental health diagnoses—but I do bring the wisdom of that therapeutic background, paired with my own lived experience, to help clients explore healing and flourishing from a broader perspective.
If you’d like to know more about my background and personal story, you can read the details on my [About Me] page. 🌿
-
The biggest difference is the lens we use. Therapy focuses on treating mental health concerns and symptoms, while religious harm recovery coaching is about moving forward with care, embodiment, and space for the nuances of your story.
Instead of pathologizing your experiences, coaching helps identify the root causes and patterns so you can see the map more clearly. From there, we focus on building freedom, resilience, and practices that support you in stepping into the life you want to create.
-
No, I don’t identify as a Christian. These days, I feel more rooted in a sense of spirituality that isn’t tied to any one label or formal religion. I often think of it as connecting with a universal source of love, presence, or wisdom.
Rather than seeking guidance from an external deity as I once did, I now tune into my own inner wisdom. And far from feeling lonely, I’ve found deep connection with a wider community of people navigating similar questions, leaning together into the nuance of what it means to live with meaning and authenticity.
Because I value exploring these deep questions, I welcome clients from many perspectives—whether you identify as atheist, Christian, spiritual-but-not-religious, or something else entirely. My focus is always on supporting your path toward authenticity and freedom.
-
Yes. I’m open to working with clients who want to keep their faith. My focus is never on changing your theology or telling you what to believe. Instead, I pay close attention to the systemic patterns that show up in religious spaces, since those often shape our nervous system and psychological programming.
I don’t come in with an agenda for what you should believe. What I will do is invite you to look at your faith through the lens of flourishing—so you can discern what feels true, safe, and life-giving for you. 🌿
And if your journey leads you away from faith altogether, that’s welcome too. My commitment is to hold space for your process—whether that means reshaping, reclaiming, or releasing aspects of belief—always with the intention of helping you reconnect with yourself.
(And fair warning: you might get tired of me always hunting for the nuance—but that’s because I trust your wisdom enough to keep honoring it.)
-
No, my coaching work is focused on individuals. The kind of nervous system recovery I support is most effective when explored one-on-one, where we can fully attend to your personal process and needs.
That said, I do understand the value of partners engaging in this work side by side. While I don’t work with couples directly, I’m happy to provide referrals if your partner is also seeking support.
-
Yes—while this isn’t the main focus of my coaching, I can support family members who want to better understand high-control system dynamics in order to love their loved one well.
I’m not a deprogrammer or interventionist, but I can help you make sense of how cult involvement impacts relationships and explore ways you can show up with clarity, compassion, and healthy boundaries.
If you’d like to explore this, you can submit an inquiry using the form below to briefly describe your situation. From there, we can see if a one-time consultation might be a good fit.

This work goes deep, and it’s important that we both know where we’re starting from. The form helps us make sure coaching is the right fit and that the process will serve your best interest.
Because my approach integrates trauma-informed methods, I want to be mindful of your psychological safety. The form gives me a sense of what you’re carrying right now, what’s been showing up for you, and what you’re hoping to gain—so I can determine if I’m the best person to support you.
You’ll never be judged for where you’re at. The form simply helps me understand how to support you best—or, if another path might serve you better, I’ll let you know. I’m not everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s okay—there’s no harm in finding that out. 🌿
How do I get started?
